General Appearance

Wahlenbergia campanuloides (Delile) Vatke / Heterotypic Synonyms: Wahlenbergia bernardi Leredde, it is an annual, prostrate, hispid-glabrescent herb, with numerous, up to 15 cm long, thin, procumbent branches from the base. Leaves alternate, sessile to shortly petiolate, linear-oblong to narrowly oblanceolate, 5-10 x 1.5-3 mm. narrowed at the base, margins denticulate, pointed obtuse at the tip. Flowers long pedicelled, usually solitary or few together towards apices, pink or violet or pale-pink. Calyx tube hemispherical, hispid, c. 1.5-2 mm long; lobes 5, linear-oblong, c. 2 x q mm, denticulate, hispid-glabrescent persistent and ± enlarged in fruit. Corolla tubular, tube c. 6-8 mm long, lobes oblong. c. 2 mm long, patent to sub patent, obtuse. Stamens 5, included. Ovary tricarpellary, trilocular. Capsule broadly ovoid, 3-3.5 x 2.5-3 mm. dehiscing by 3 apical valves. Seeds numerous, triangular-oblong, c. 0.5 mm long, brown.
