General Appearance

Silene rubella L., it is an annual, with erect stems, either simple or branched from the base. Stems 20-60 cm, erect, simple or branched from the base; indumentum tomentose, puberulent, retrorse. Basal leaves up to 5 × 15 mm, oblanceolate or sub-spatulate; cauline leaves up to 45 × 11 mm, ovate-lanceolate, pubescent, rarely subglabrous. Inflorescence a dichasium. Pedicels of central flowers 16-40 cm, with puberulent-retrorse indumentum. Calyx 9-12 mm, narrowed at the base, 10-nerved, puberulent, green or reddish, with anastomosing nerves; teeth ovate, obtuse, ciliate. Petal limb 1.5-3 mm, subentire, emarginate or bifid, pink. Ovary with 3 styles. Carpophore 2-4 mm, tomentose or glabrescent. Capsule somewhat lustrous, ovoid; carpophore c. 3 mm. Seeds dark amber-brown, wingless, reniform, with markedly concave lateral faces and a channeled back. Cells of the lateral faces featuring a central row of papillae and a crenate to dentate outline; cells of the attachment zone with filiform elements.
