General Appearance
Silene nocturna L., it is an annual, erect, almost always branched. Stems 10-60 cm, erect, usually branched. Lower leaves obovate to lanceolate-spathulate, obtuse, pubescent. Inflorescence usually compound, sometimes with alar flowers. Flowers 3-13, white or bluish-white, up to 1.5 cm across. arranged in raceme-like cymes, very crowded towards the top. Calyx oblong-obovoid, puberulent, with 10 broad green veins and triangular teeth. Petals usually with the limb white on the adaxial face, bifid, exserted. Capsule cylindrical; carpophore robust, puberulent. Seeds wingless, reniform, with markedly concave lateral faces and a slightly channeled back. Cells of the lateral faces with numerous papillae, aligned or irregularly arranged, and a crenate to dentate outline. Cells of the attachment zone with filiform elements.
