Umbilicus horizontalis (Guss.) DC.

Common Name: Surrat Al-ard, Wadn Ashaayib.

General Appearance

Umbilicus horizontalis (Guss.) DC., it is a succulent tuberous geophyte, Stem 20-50 cm, erect. Basal leaves orbicular, peltate, concave above, sinuate-crenate. Cauline leaves more numerous and crowded, many of them usually linear and progressively smaller distally. Bracts usually linear, about equalling the pedicels, but occasionally large and leaf-like. Pedicels 3-9 mm. Flowers up to 7mm, tubular, sub sessile, mostly horizontal (few pendent); raceme fairly dense, sometimes branched at the base, occupying less or about ½ the stem. Sepals ovate, acuminate. Corolla whitish-green or straw-coloured, sometimes tinged with pink; corolla-lobes triangular, lanceolate, acuminate, dull crimson. Carpels tapered to a fairly long style.
