General Appearance
Trifolium angustifolium L., it is a stiffly erect or sub erect annual herb, appressed or sub appressed hairy, up 10 30 cm tall. Stipules adnate to petiole up to half their length, many-nerved, free portion lanceolate-subulate. Leaflets narrowly linear-lanceolate, (20-) 30-50 x 2-4 mm, entire or nearly so. Heads 20-60 mm long, many-flowered spicate, cylindrical or conical, shortly peduncled, not separating as a whole from stem at maturity. Flowers 10-13 mm long, pale pink to almost purple, with corolla usually about as long as the calyx. Calyx tubular campanulate, 10-nerved, hairy, with somewhat tubercle-based hairs; teeth, except the somewhat longer lower one, as long as the tube, stellately spreading in fruit, setaceous; throat entirely closed. Fruiting calyx with oblong tube, hairy-silky, with ciliated teeth, spreading, stiff, linear awl-shaped, slightly uneven, ending in a yellowish, glabrous tip. Corolla roughly equal to the calyx. Seeds 1.83–2.06 x 1.33–1.52 x 0.86–1.13 mm, mostly ellipsoid-compressed. Testa smooth, glabrous, shiny, orange-yellow, areolate. Shallow spinning depression; circular thread, practically pointed, with a very fine edge. Minimal lens, barely discernible under low magnification (< 40x), located at c. 0.1–0.15 mm of the thread.
Flowering in: Feb-Apr.
