General Appearance

Lomelosia oberti-manettii (Pamp.) Greuter & Burdet / Syn. Scabiosa oberti-manettii Pamp , it is a caespitose. rhizomatous, ± woody at the base and much branched, pubescent perennial. Branches leafy, ending into a flowering head. Basal leaves spathulate, entire 40 x 7 mm. Cauline leaves pinnatipartite with lateral lobes spreading out, 15 x 2 mm, terminal lobe 25 x 3 mm, linear to lanceolate. Peduncles 3-15 (-35) cm, pubescent, Involucral bracts 8-10, sub-biseriate, pubescent to hirsute. Outer involucral 3-5 (-7) x 2-3 mm, ovate, acute. Inner involucral 8-12 (-15) x 2-3 mm, linear-lanceolate, acuminate; palea greenish, linear c. 9 x 2 mm, acuminate. Heads (1-) 1.5 (-2) cm in diam., before anthesis, radiate; fruiting heads ± spherica1. Involucel tube (2-) 3-4 mm long in fruits, slightly compressed, base villous with hairs as long as the body of the involucel, rest of the body tomentose, 8-ribed, with 8-deep, ovoid pits in the upper half; corona ± purplish to grey, 3.5-5 (-6) mm in length (in fruiting stage), 30-40 nerved, lomcnto5c at the back; diaphragm transverse, enclosing the throat of the involucel body, villous; setae of the calyx 5, hairy al the base and scabrid above, as long as or slightly longer than the corona. Corolla of the outer flowers 2-lipped. 10-12 mm long, pale to yellowish brown or pinkish white, villous outside; lobes 5, entire or slightly crenate, corolla. of the inner flowers 7 (-8) mm long: slightly zygomorphic, 5-lobed.
