General Appearance

Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke, it is a glabrous perennial plant with a root that is sometimes greatly thickened. Stems ± erect, ascending, or prostrate, up to 60 cm long. Leaves opposite, usually apiculate or mucronate; lower leaves petiolate, oblanceolate, with scabrid margins; middle leaves sessile, lanceolate, lanceolate-elliptic, or ovate-elliptic, with margins slightly or not at all scabrid. Multiflorous inflorescences with pedicellate flowers. Calyx inflated, persistent in fruit, ovoid-globose, with reticulate venation. Capsule enclosed within the calyx. Seeds grayish, reniform to suborbicular, wingless. Lateral faces slightly convex; back not grooved. Cells of the lateral faces and back polygonal, convex, with a central tubercle and toothed margins.
