General Appearance
Silene apetala Willd., it is a pubescent annual herbaceous species, usually short-statured in the eastern islands (6–30 cm), with a taproot and erect or ascending stems. Leaves opposite, puberulous; basal leaves narrowly oblanceolate, upper leaves narrowly lanceolate, with ciliate margins towards the base and usually pigmented tips. Inflorescences terminal and lateral, either single-flowered or dense and many-flowered. Flowers erect; basal ones with very long pedicels, upper ones with shorter pedicels (shorter than the calyx). Calyx campanulate in fruit, with long hairs along the veins and ciliate teeth. Petals pink, often greatly reduced and barely exserted or even absent, though sometimes well-developed and deeply bifid. Carpophore very short; capsule ovoid, Seeds 0.9–1 x 0.9–1.05 x 0.3–0.35 mm, dark brown (orange-brown towards the center of the lateral faces), suborbicular—sometimes heart-shaped—nearly symmetrical, strongly compressed, and bialate, with a deeply grooved back and slightly concave lateral faces. Cells highly elongated with deeply toothed outlines and numerous papillae aligned along their length. Hilar depression very pronounced, lacking filiform elements.
