General Appearance

Agrostemma githago L., it is an annual herb, erect. up to 1 meter tall, dichotomously branched, densely patent hairy. Leaves sessile, linear-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate, 10-12 cm x 5-8 (-10) mm. ± connate-vaginate at base, acute, pilose. Flowers solitary, axillary, large, c. 4-5 cm across, on c. 10-12 cm long, hairy peduncles. Calyx tube strongly ribbed, up to 20 mm long, patent hairy, lobes 5, linear, 20-35 x 2-3 mm, glabrous within, patent hairy outside, caducous. Petals mostly shorter than calyx lobes, violet-red to white, claw narrow, limb broadly obovate, entire, truncate to ± retuse, glabrous. Stamens in 2 whorls of 5 each, ± unequal and as long as calyx tube; anthers linear-oblong, c. 3 x 1.5 mm. Ovary sessile, ovoid, glabrous; styles filiform, white-purplish, villous. Capsule sessile, oblong-ovoid. up to 45 mm long, glabrous, 5-toothed at apex. Seeds ± reniform, c. 3 mm or more long, acutely tubercled, black.
