General Appearance

Cerinthe major L., it is an annual herb, up to 20-50 (-60) cm tall. Stem glabrous to glaucous. Lower leaves obovate spathulate, attenuate into a short petiole, ciliate, tuberculate. Upper leaves ovate, lanceolate often cordate-amplexicaul at base, 10-50 (-60) x 10-20 (25) mm, obtuse to acute. Cyme 15-30 mm long with c. 2 mm long pediclled flowers. Bracts ovate to broadly elliptic ovate, 7-9 mm long, glaucous reddish or green. Calyx lobes 5 acute, ciliate, 7-8 x 2-3 mm. Corolla 18-25 (-30) x 5-8 mm, slightly saccate, yellow altogether or with a purplish spot at the base, sometimes cream coloured, limb 15-18 (-20) mm in diameter, lobes very short, ovate, sharply recovered. Stamens includes or slightly exerted, inserted almost in the middle of corolla tube. Anthers c. 5 mm long with 2 appendices on either side of the base; filaments c. 5 mml long. Stigma capitate or slightly bifid. Style 20-25 mm long. Nutlets blackish,4-4.5 x 2-3 mm, plano-convex, acuminate.
