General Appearance

Asperugo procumbens L., it is a small procumbent or climbing, scabrous-hispid annual herb. Stems many, up to 60 cm tall, with short, stout, restores spinules. Leaves alternate and sub opposite, sapthulate, oblong or petoiled, sub entire 20-75 x 5-10 (-30) mm, covered on both surfaces with short sub appressed or patent tuberculate hairs, subacute-obtuse. Flowers axillary, 1 or 2 together. Calyx lobed almost up to the base; lobes dentate at the margin, c. 1.5 mm long, ovate, enlarged up to 15 mm in fruit, equally broad forming a 2-lippcd covering around the nutlets, unequal with few scattered spinules outside and glabrous inside. Corolla purple or violet, smaller than calyx, infundibuliform with, 5 small white scales inside, 2-3 mm long, limb 1.5 mm across, lobes rounded, sub erect. Stamens included, inserted in the middle of the tube with ovate-oblong, obtuse anthers, c. 5 mm long. Ovary deeply lobed with a gynobasic style. Nutlets 4, ovate, laterally compressed, c. 3 mm long, densely and finely tuberculate, brownish, attached at a small sub punctiform scar above the middle to the carpophore.
