General Appearance

Xeranthemum inapertum (L.) Mill. / Synonym(s) Heterotypic: Xeranthemum inapertum var. reboudianum Verl., it is an annual herb, up to 10-30 (-40) cm tall, small whitish, simple or branched.  Leaves entire, lanceolate, hairy on both surfaces, upper surface whitish, under surface greenish. Basal and lower cauline leaves, attenuate into a short petiole, rest sessile. Capitula solitary on a long peduncle,10-20 mm in diam. Involucre glabrous. Involucral bracts with broad purplish or pale-pink streak. Inner involucral bracts 13-17 mm, not strongly differentiated from the outer, not radiating, lanceolate. acute. Fertile florets (25-) 30-40 (-50). Cypsela black marked with a white spot at the base; pappus scales 5, longer than the body of the cypsela.
