General Appearance

Schouwia purpurea (Forssk.) Schweinf., it is an annual herb, up to 1 m tall, glabrous, branched above. Lower leaves obovate-oblong, sinuate dentate to almost entire obtuse, narrowed below, sessile or sub sessile. Upper leaves ovate, cordate, amplexicaule, smaller than the lower leaves, sub obtuse to acute, usually entire. Flowers 1-1.5 cm across, variable in size. Pedicels up to 5 (-7) mm long in fruit, thickened, ascending. Sepals 5-10 mm long, violaceous. Petals 7.5-1.5 x 3-.5 mm long, pink or violet to white. Stamens 4.5-9.5: .5.5-10.5 mm; anthers 2-5 mm long with c. 1 mm long mucro. Siliculae 1.5-2 cm in diam. with 5-10 (-12) mm long beak. Seeds 1.7–2.1 x 1.7–1.8 x 1.5–1.75 mm, sub globose, wingless, ochre-orange in color. Surface glabrous, somewhat glossy, seemingly smooth, ocellated, with anticlinal walls raised towards the periphery and depressed towards the center and narrow, raised anticlinal walls.
