General Appearance

Ononis sicula Guss. / Homotypic Synonyms: Ononis viscosa ssp. sicula (Guss.) Hub. -Mor, it is an annual herb, erect or ascending, up to 30 cm, hispid with glandular and eglandular hairs. Leaves (1-) 3-foliolate; leaflets mostly oblong-lanceolate, serrate above, up to 30 x 10 mm, the middle ones somewhat larger, petiolulate; stipules lanceolate, acute, adnate to petiole c. half way, nearly entire. Peduncles about as long as subtending leaves, with an arista (awn) about 1 cm or less long, 1(-2)-flowered. Flowers pale yellow, sometimes purple-veined on the standard, 7-10 mm long. Calyx teeth 3-4 times as long as the tube, subulate-linear. Corolla 6-9 mm long, ± shorter than calyx. Pods 10-15 (20) x (2-) 3-4 mm. a1mosl twice as long as the calyx, linear-oblong, straight, cylindrical, ± inflated shortly beaked, pendulous, hirsute with glandular and eglandular hairs, 8-25-sceded. Seeds 0.8–1.1 x 0.8–1.1 x 0.6–0.7 mm, sub globular-reniform, tubereulate-scabrous, brown.
