General Appearance
Cupressus sempervirens L. / Heterotypic Synonyms: Cupressus sempervirens var. horizontalis (Mill.) G.Don. , it is a trees with branches erect or horizontally spreading, up to 30 m tall. Leaves small, opposite, decussate, scale-like, closely adpressed, usually with a longitudinal furrow on outer surface, apex obtuse, frequently with a sunken resin gland on the back. Inflorescence monoecious. Male cones terminal on short twigs, oblong-cylindrical. Female cones globose-sub globose or ovoid, 2-4 cm in diameter, solitary, brown or greyish; scales 6-14, peltate with a central prominence on outer surface, brown, woody and separating when fully ripe; ovules up to 20 on each scale. Seeds 5-7 mm long, winged.
