General Appearance
Capparis cartilaginea Decne.̸ Homotypic Synonyms: Capparis spinosa ssp. cartilaginea, it is a sprawling, prostrate or hanging spiny shrub with branches up to 2 m long; the shoots are shortly hairy, later becoming glabrous. The leaves are alternate, elliptical, ovate to almost round, 1.5–5 cm long and 0.8–5 cm wide, leathery, entire, just below the apex often with a small curved spine; the petiole is 0.5–3 cm long. The four-petaled flowers grow singly in the leaf axils on 3–8 cm long pedicels; the sepals are free, conspicuously unequal, 1–4 cm long, the outer ovate-lanceolate and shallowly navicular, the inner ovate, strongly convex; the corolla petals are also free and somewhat unequal, ovate to round, 1–3 cm long, white, pink to purple after flowering; the stamens are numerous, about 5 cm long; the testis grows on the gynophore. The fruits are obovate or pear-shaped berries, 2–5 cm long and 2–3 cm wide, deep red when ripe.
