General Appearance

Atriplex portulacoides L. / Homotypic Synonyms: Halimione portulacoides (L.) Allen., it is a very whitish mealy small, straggling shrub to 80(-150) cm. Rhizome short, creeping. Stems decumbent, branches ascending, terete below, angled above. Lower leaves opposite, shortly (5-10 mm) petioled, elliptic, teeth 0; upper leaves linear, entire, obtuse or apiculate. Flowers very small, greenish, borne on a terminal panicle, composed of slender spikes, on which the flowers are arranged in small clusters, terminal and axillary compound spikes; partial dense. flowers unisexual, the male flower with 5 tepals, the female flower usually with 0 tepals, but 2 bracteoles enlarging and partly concealing the fruit. Bracteoles in fruit 3-5 mm long and rather broader, ob-deltoid, united 2/3 of the way from the base, usually 3 lobed, somewhat cartilaginous at the base, sessile.
