General Appearance

Onobrychis caput-galli (L.) Lam., it is an annual herb, prostrate to erect, hairy, up to 30 cm long. Leaves 5-15 cm long, imparipinnate, 11-19-foliolale, stipulate; stipules shorter than petiole, white-scarious with a middle green nerve, ovate-lanceolate, aristate; leaflets 5-25 x (2-) 3-7 (-9) mm, oblong linear, sub sessile, mucronulate, hairy beneath. Peduncles as long as the subtending leaves, slightly elongating in fruit. Racemes 3-8-(-15)-flowered; bracts small, longer than pedicels, white-scarious, lanceolate. Flowers 5-7 mm long, pink-purple; calyx pilose and ciliate, with subulate-linear teeth, 2-3 times as long as the tube. Corona as long as or slightly exceeding the calyx. Pods (7-) 9-10 (-12) mm, semi orbicular, sub compressed, hirtulous. foveolate and toothed on disc and with many spiny, ± hooked teeth on the crest. Seed 1, reniform, c. 3 mm in diam., smooth, brown to black.
