General Appearance
Ceratophyllum demersum L., it is an aquatic submerged, glabrous herb, branches elongated, 20-80 (-100) cm long. Leaves translucent, rigid and horny, 5-12 in each whorl, green, 1-2.5 cm long, usually once or twice forked, segments linear, irregularly denticulate, those of winter leaves shorter and broader than summer leaves. Male flower; perianth 7-9(-12), segments oblong-subulate; stamens 12-16 on concave receptacle. Female flower; perianth 9-10, hypogynous; gynoecium monocarpellary, unilocular with 1-anatropous, pendulous ovule. Fruit 4.0 x 3.5 mm, ovoid, warty, ± as long as persistent style, and with 2 hooked, lateral spines at the base.
