General Appearance

Gypsophila pilosa Huds., it is an annual, up to 60 (-80) cm tall herb. Stem dichotomously branched, usually glabrous towards base and flowering shoots, villous or hispid in the middle, hairs glandular, 1.5-2.5 mm long. Leaves sessile to sub sessile. lanceolate, 3-10 x 1-2,5 cm. obscurely 3-5-nerved, entire, acute-acuminate, glandular hairy to rarely sub glabrous. Inflorescence a tax panicle of loose dichasial cymes. Flowers pate-pink or reddish-purple, c. 5 mm across. Pedicel filiform, up to 6 cm long, glabrous, purplish, ± deflexed. Bracts leaf-like, linear-lanceolate, hairy, acute. Calyx tubular-campanulate, 5-7 mm long, dilated in fruit. commissures scarious-white, teeth 5, triangular, c. 1.5-2.5 mm long, ± obtuse-acute, glandular hispid outside. Petals 5, claw linear-oblong, 8-10 mm long, gradually dilated upwards, limb obovate, c. 1.5-2 mm long, emarginate to shallowly 2-lobed. Stamens 10, filaments filiform, white, 8 mm long, anthers ovoid, yellow. Ovary sessile, ovoid, c. 2.5 mm in diameter, glabrous; styles 2, filiform, c. 3 mm long, stigmatic on inner side. Capsule sub globose, 6-8 mm in diameter, straw yellow, glabrous, brittle. Seeds reniform, c. 1.5 mm long, obtusely tubercled.
