General Appearance

Valerianella chlorodonta Coss. & Durieu , it is an annual herb, c. 16-20 cm tall. much branched, rather robust, pubescent in the older parts. Stems longitudinally striate, with ribs sometime weakly winged, often with basal leaves present in fruiting stage. Basal leaves 25-35 x 5-8 mm, oblanceolate, obtuse, entire. Mid-cauline leaves 30-40 x 8-10 mm, obovate-lanceolate, obtuse, margins with few teeth. Upper cauline leaves 8-12 x 2-4 mm, narrowly oblong to narrowly oblanceolate, base with 1 or 2 pairs of lobes. Ultimate inflorescence branches with ± globose flowering heads, with alar flowers often present. Bracts 3-4 x 1.5-2 mm, ovate, acute, with a single mid-rib, outer ones with narrow scarious ciliate margins, inner broadly scarious with ciliate margins. Calyx coroniform, densely villous on the inside, divided into 6 lobes up to the base; lobes 1-1.2 mm, narrowly triangular, acuminate. Corolla white, 1.5-1.75 (-2) mm. Fruits 3-4 x 2.5-3 mm (excl. calyx lobes), densely villous, ± cupuliform; sterile locules reduced to longitudinal ribs separated by an ovoid, ± shallow groove.

Jabal Nafusa:  Reported from Tarhuna, Ain Sharshara by Keith   Hinshir Bu-Idder, near Janduba, (25 km) from Gharian 1974   Msallata-Garaboulli Province 2020

Wild in Libya, endemic of North Africa from ( Morocco to Libya).
