General Appearance

Bongardia chrysogonum (L.) Spach, it is a tuberous geophyte, sub globose. Leaflets radical, imparipinnately compound (described as deeply pinnatisect by some authors), 10-25 cm long, spreading horizontally. Petiole long, leaflets 7-17, opposite or in whorls of 3 or 4, sessile, oblong to obovate, cuneate, apex 2-5 lobed, often reddish near the rachis. Scape erect 30-60 cm tall. Inflorescence paniculate. Sepals 3-6, reddish. caducous. Petals golden yellow, 8-12 x 3.5-5 mm, Fruit c. 15 mm, ovate-elliptic, inflated, rupturing irregularly at the tip; seeds 1-2, black, pruinose.
