Marine Life Conservation

Libya’s coastline is part of the Mediterranean Sea, renowned for its rich biodiversity, unique habitats, and high endemicity. It is one of the most biodiverse seas globally, hosting over 17,000 recorded biological species, representing 8% of the world’s animal species and 18% of plant species. However, studies reveal that the Mediterranean is particularly vulnerable to climate change due to its location and composition, ranking as the second-most affected region after the Arctic. Additionally, the Mediterranean faces some of the highest biodiversity loss rates globally, primarily due to human activities such as overfishing, destructive fishing practices, habitat destruction, invasive species introduction, marine pollution, and plastic waste. Recognizing these challenges, Edama has adopted a fresh perspective on marine environments and their ecosystems. The organization has significantly increased its efforts to protect these ecosystems through collaboration with research institutions, universities, and local and international environmental organizations. Edama actively supports initiatives that contribute to an effective and cohesive marine strategy aligned with national and international commitments. These are examples of Edama’s activities in the field of marine life protection and ecosystem conservation.
