General Appearance

Volutaria tubuliflora (Murb.) Sennen / Homotypic Synonyms: Amberboa tubiflora Murb., it is an annual herb, unarmed, up to 2 m tall. Basal leaves ± arranged in a rosette, pinnately divided, with toothed margins. Terminal flower heads, solitary or in groups of 2–3, pedunculate. Involucre ± ovoid, villous; bracts arranged in a few series, the outer and middle ones with an acute, straw-colored, triangular appendage. Flowers with a pinkish-purple corolla limb. Achenes homomorphic, grayish, hirsute, ± oblong-obovoid, slightly compressed, slightly ribbed, spaced pitted between the ribs, with a denticulate apical corona and a fleshy elaiosome. Pappus persistent with several rows of whitish, serrulate, unequal scales; the inner ones longer and wider.
