General Appearance

Tyrimnus leucographus (L.) Cass., it is an annual herb, up to 20-60 (-200) cm. Basal leaves 5.5-14 x 2-5 cm, obovate, petiolate. green with marble white veins, with serrate margins. Cauline leaves narrower and smaller, decurrent into spiny wings, longer than the internode, green and slightly lanate above, greyish-lanate beneath. Capitula on 20-40 cm long, leafless peduncles, (to-)14-18 mm in diam., sub-globose, erect but nodding slightly in fruit. Involucre 10-18 x 13-15 mm. Involueral bracts lanceolate, acuminate, glabrous to floccose-lanate. Cypsela 4-5 x 1.5 mm, smooth and glossy, dark-brown or blackish-red with 4 yellow ribs, the inter-costal area rupturing at maturity exposing mucilage. Pappus 10-15 mm.
