General Appearance

Thapsia asclepium L. / Homotypic Synonyms: Elaeoselinum asclepium (L.) Bertol., it is an erect, almost glabrous perennial herb, up to 130 cm tall, with solid, terete smooth stem, branched above. Basal leaves 3-5-pinnate, horizontal to ascending, divisions often whorled; ultimate leaf-segments short, filiform, 2-3 mm long; petiole and rachis ± pubescent; cauline leaves reduced to inflated petioles. Rays 8-25, ± equal, somewhat indurated at base; pedicels 8-28, ± equal, 5-8 mm long. Sepals inconspicuous. Petals yellow. Fruits (5-) 8-15 mm long, orbicular or ovate-oblong, ± cordate below with wide, whitish, shiny lateral wings; dorsal ridges obsolete to distinct but with narrow wings.
