General Appearance
Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn. / Heterotypic Synonyms: Silybum marianum var. albiflorum Eig, it is an annual or biennial plants, up to (9-) 30-100 (-150) cm, stems ribbed. glabrous or shortly arachnoid pubescent, green. Leaves glabrous, pale-green, mottled white along veins, strongly spiny-dentate. Basal leaves (9-) 25-50 x (5-) 12-25 cm, deeply pinnatifid, petiolate; lobes broadly ovate. Cauline leaves, less deeply divided, smaller, sessile, auriculate amplexicaule, with yellowish-with spines up to 8 mm. Flowers purple. Involucre 2.5-4 x2-4 cm (excl. spreading parts of involucral bracts). Peduncles long, naked or with few, small, leaf-like bracts. Outer & middle involucral bracts with adpressed spiny-ovate bases, widened abruptly to ovate-subulate appendages; appendages 8-15 x 6-10 mm, reflexed (in the outer ones) to erect (in the inner ones), gradually tapered into recurved, canaliculate 20·50 mm spines. Inner most involucral bracts lanceolate, not appendaged. Cypsela 6-8 x 2.5-4 mm, shiny, black with greyish or brownish streaks; outer setae of the pappus 15-20 mm.
