General Appearance

Scorzoneroides simplex (Viv.) Greuter / Homotypic Synonyms: Leontodon simplex (Viv.) Widder, it is an annual herb, with slender tap root. Stems 1-4 (-7), (5-) 10-35 cm, simple, scapiform or 2 (-3) branched above, glabrous or sparsely pubescent below the capitulum, with 1-3 bracts. Bracts 2-4 (-6), ± clasping the peduncle. Leaves all basal, 10-60 (-150) x 5-15 (-25) mm. oblong to oblanceolate, shallowly sinnuate-toothed to pinnatifid, gradually tapered into ± long petiole, glabrous or with occasional, simple hairs on margins and under surface. Capitula 1(-2) per branch, long pedunculate. Involucre 8-10 (-12) x 7-9 (-10) mm. bracts 3 (-4) rowed; glabrous, eglandular hairy pubescent or occasionally with few setulose hairs restricted on the median nerve. Outer most involucral bracts 3-4 mm long, ovate, acute. Inner involucral bracts 10-12 (-13) mm, lanceolate, narrowly scarious margined, obtuse with apex: finely ciliate. Ligules yellow, usually concolorous, basal tubes 3-4 (-5) mm, finely pubescent; limbs 9-10 (-12) mm. Stigmas yellow. Cypsela dark brown, strongly transversely muricate, dimorphic; those of the periphcri 4-4.5 (-5) mm, narrowed into a beak, weakly incurved-loosely infolded by the inner most involucral bracts, epappose; pappus (when present) irregularly coroniform, of short scales or occasionally of 1-2 long, plumose setae, often deciduous; inner cypselas 6-7 (-8) mm, straight, narrowed into a long beak, pappose; pappus of 1-row of c. 10 setae; setae plumose.
