General Appearance

Rhanterium suaveolens Desf., it is a perennial plant, up to (40) 50-60 (-80) cm tall, much branched, rigid, subwoody, hairy; hairs woolly, whitish-grey. Leaves alternate, simple, sessile, (0.7-) 1-1.5 x 0.2 mm, oblong lanceolate, acute, margins with 2-3 pairs of small, outward directed teeth, hairy. Peduncles 0.5-1.5 cm, glabrescent, persistant on the stem, Capitulum (7-) 10-13 x5-7 mm, broadly cylindrical to subglobose, yellow. Involucre sub globose, glabrous. Involucral bracts 5-6 rowed, 5 in each row, herbaceo- coriaceous, recurved from the center forming soft hooks, acute, 1-nerved, margins narrowly membranous. Involucral bracts of the 1st row 3-3.25 x 0.5-0.75 mm, linear-ovate, ± flat. Involucral bracts of the 2nd row 3.5-4 x I mm, ovate, basal part weakly convex at the back. Involucral bracts of the 3rd row 4.25-5 x 1.25 mm. Involucral bracts of the 4th row 5-5.5 x 1-1.25 mm. Involucral bracts of the 5th & 6th row 5.25-6 x 1-1.25 mm, ovate-lanceolate, weakly reflexed, midnerve carinate at the back. Palea of the ray florets 4-5 x 2.5-3 mm, oblong, boat-shaped, with strongly infolded margins enclosing the basal parts of the ray floret, coriaceo- membranous, 3-4 nerved, apiculate. Those of the peripharal disc florets 5-6 x 0.5 mm, linear-lanceolate, ± flat, membranous, 1-nerved; nerve strong and thick. Ray florets 1-rowed, female; ligule 4.5-5 x 1.5 mm, oblong-lanceolate, unequally 3-toolhed; ovary 2-2.5 mm, curved, laterally flattened, 10 or more ribbed; base with a small callus; apex with 1 or 2 minute projections. Disc florets corolla 4-4.5 mm, narrowly obconical, 5-lobed; lobes 0.25- 0.5 mm, ovate, acute; ovary 1.5-2 mm, weakly 5-angled; pappus of (4-) 5 setae; setae 3-3.25 mm, narrowly spathulate, distally plumose.
