General Appearance

Pseudopodospermum undulatum (Vahl) Zaika, Sukhor. & N.Kilian /  Homotypic SynonymsScorzonera undulata Vahl, it is a perennial, up to (5-) 7-25 cm tall, sub scapigerous. glabrous or tomentose, hairs when present usually restricted in the lower part of the stem. leaves and below the capitulum on the peduncles, simple, straight or wooly, white to dirty brown. Root-stock vertical, 0.7·1.5 (-2) cm in thickness, tuberous-incrassate, oblong-cylindrical, dark-brown, not fibrous above; sub-terranean part of the plant usually covered with the remains of previous year leaf bases; leaf bases whitish-yellow to straw-yellow, becoming fiber like. Stems solitary, simple or branched near the base, branches monocephalic. Basal leaves 30-150 x 2-7 mm. linear to linear-Ianceolate, entire, flat or margins sinnuate. Cauline leaves similar but smaller. amplexicaule. Involucre 15-25 mm long. cylindrical-campanulate. Involucral bracts 3-4 rowed. broadly ovate, acute, slightly hairy to glabrous. Ligules 11̸2-2 times as long as the involucre, purplish or violet (rarely white). Cypselas homomorphic. (marginal ones slightly curved. inner ± straight), 9-11 (-12) x 0.75-1 mm. cylindrical-ellipsoid, with ribs scabrid or rugose to squamate, otherwise glabrous, rarely hairy, pale brownish to brown; basal part soft, sponge. paler in colour, c. 1/5 as long as the rest of the cypsela; pappus sessile with a distinct, brown ring at its base, dirty white, setae of two types; some plumose throughout, persistent, as long as the cypsela; others plumose in the lower parts and scabrid above, brittle. usually exceed the length of the cypsela.
