General Appearance

Muscarimia muscari (L.) Losinsk. ̸ Homotypic Synonyms: Muscari racemosum Mill., it is a tuberous geophyte, glabrous herb, with tunicate, ovate to ovate-sub globular bulb, c. 2 cm in cross section, usually producing 1-2 bulbils; tunics membmnous, red-brownish. Leaves 3-6 per plant, basal, semicylindrical-canaliculate, 15-40 x 0.1-0.2 cm, reflexing ± at middle. Scape usually one, 10-30 cm long, green with brown violaceous dots. Inflorescence racemose, congested, with small fragrant flowers; top ones sterile, small and erect, while the rest fertile and nodding; pedicels c. 3 mm long, bracteates; bracts ± linear, coriaceous whitish, c. 1 mm long. Perianth oblong-urceolate, 4-5 mm long, with very short, triangular teeth-like, whitish, recurving segments. Stamens 6, viseriate, filaments c. 1 mm long. Anthers ovoid, dark-violaceous, as long as filaments. Ovary ± ovoid, style 1-2 mm long, shorter than stamens. Capsules triquetrate, 5-7 mm long, with 1-2 obovoid black seeds in each chamber.
