General Appearance
Geropogon hybridus (L.) Sch.Bip. / Homotypic Synonyms: Tragopogon hybridus L., it is an annual herb, up to 20 – 40 cm, the whole plant is glaucous and more or less glabrous. The stems are erect and have a cylindrical section. The leaves along the stem are sessile and arranged alternately; the basal ones are roseate and amplexicauli. The lamina is continuous with linear (graminiform) to narrow lanceolate shapes, acute apexes and an attenuated base. The side dish is whole. The margins are continuous or toothed. The surface is glabrous or tomentose. The veins are parallel (the central one is very prominent). Leaf size: 3 mm wide; length 60 – 80 mm. Leaves. The inflorescences are composed of solitary but leafy flower heads, mostly pedunculated, homogamous and radiate; they are composed of a glabrous cylindrical casing, made up of 7-9 imbricated bracts in a single series which protect the receptacle on which the ligulate flowers are inserted. The bracts have linear to lanceolate shapes; sometimes they can be connate. The receptacle is flat, slightly hairy. Flower head diameter: 3 – 5 cm. The flowers are tetra-cyclic (i.e. there are 4 whorls: calyx – corolla – androecium – gynoecium) and pentamerous (each whorl generally has 5 elements). The flowers are also hermaphroditic and zygomorphic.
