General Appearance

Filago pyramidata L., it is an annual herb, greyish-white. Stems (2-) 5-30 cm, rigid, erect to procumbent, branched; hairs shaggy adpressed. Leaves (6-) 10-15 x 2 mm, oblong-obovate to ± spathulate, apiculate; those subtending the cluster of capitula (3-) 4-6, ± equal or slightly exceeding the cluster. Capitula (4-) 5-12 (-20) in an axillary cluster, 5-6 x 2.5-3 mm, cylindric-pyramidal, sharply 5-angled. Involucral bracts ± (5-) 6-rowed. Involucral bracts of 1st. row 5 x 1.25 mm (including arista 2 mm), obovate-lanceolate, strongly convex at the back, with dense hairs, with a dark brown spot near the apex below the arista. Involucral bracts of the 2nd & 3rd rows similar but slightly broader and hairy on the margin and at the back. Involucral bracts of the 4th. row shorter and broader, 4.25 x 1.5 mm, ovate, sharply, acuminate, keeled and strongly convex at the back, in the upper half pubescent on the back and with a dark brown spot below the acumin, margins papery. Involucral bracts of the 5th row similar but shorter than the last, 4 x 1.25 mm. Involucral bracts of the 6th row shortest and broadest 3.5 x 2 mm, oblongish-ovate, acute-apiculate, shallowly convex at the back, margins broad, membranous, glabrous. Female florets corolla 2 mm, filiform, epappose. Inner female florets (from the apex of the raceptacle) absent (or 5-7). Hermaphrodite florets 6 (-7), corolla 2.25 mm, 4-toothed; tube narrow, ± uniform; pappus setae 8-10, connate at the base, scabrid, as long as the corolla. Cypsela 0.5-0.8 mm, cylindrical to oblong-ovoid.
