General Appearance
Crupina vulgaris Pers. ex Cass., it is an annual herb, up to (10-) 20-60 (-80) cm tall, slender, erect, unbranched except in the region of inflorescence, leafy up to the branches. Basal leaves up to 50 x 20 mm, oblong to obovate, entire to dentate or incised toothed, sessile to petiolate, soon decaying. Cauline leaves scabrid, sessile, sub-pinnatisect with lobes 0.5-1.5 mm wide, linear, denticulate; rachis ± glabrous. Upper leaves similar but decreasing in size; branches of the corymb leafless. Capitula 3-5 (-7) flowered, pedunculate or sessile, narrow. Involucres 8-15 x 3-5 mm (at the time of anthcsis), fusiform when young, becoming narrowly obconical (14-23 x 7-12 mm) in fruiting. Involucral bracts elliptic, acute, sniped green or purplish distally. Florets pink or light purple, exceeding the involucre. Corolla tubes hairy; hairs with finger-like, recurved, lateral projections on their side walls. Cypsela 3-5 x (1.5-) 2-2.5 (-3) mm, sub cylindrical, with a wide suborbkular, basal hilum; pappus setae 5-6 (-7) mm, blackish-brown, surrounding triangular, lanceolate, acute scales.
