General Appearance

Crocodilium creticum (Boiss. & Heldr.) N.Garcia & Susanna / Heterotypic Synonyms: Centaurea aegialophila Boiss. & Heldr., it is a perennial herb, only 3-5(-20) cm tall. Stem very short. Leaves grow in a basal rosette, are petiolate, quite variable in shape, mostly ovate in outline, green, grey-green to reddish, lyrately pinnate to pinnately lobed, with 0-4 lateral lobes, the terminal lobe being distinctly the largest. The bracts are ovate, 1.8-2.5 cm long and 1.3-1.7 cm wide. The middle involucral bracts have an appendage at the apex with a narrow, entire, translucent membranous margin and a 1-4 mm long terminal spine. Flowers are pink, sometimes the flowers in the centre of the bract are white, the marginal ones are rayed. Achenes are 4.5–5 mm long, densely appressed hairy, with multi-row, feathery down.
