General Appearance

Chiliadenus sericeus (Batt. & Trab.) Brullo / Homotypic Synonyms: Varthemia sericea (Batt. & Trab.) Diels // Infraspecifics: Chiliadenus sericeus ssp. sericeus, it is an undershrubs. Stems rigid, slender, simple or branched, hairy at least in the young parts. Leaves sessile, oblong or oblong-elliptic, mucronate, densely appressed hairy, margins revolute. Leaves on the main branches 10-15 x 1.5-2.5 mm; those on the fruit bearing branches 3-6 x2 mm. Capitula solitary or 2(-3) on an axillary, 5-10 mm long branches, 6-8 mm long and 3-5 mm wide. 9-10 flowered. Involucre obconical; involucral bracts 4-5 rowed, finely pubescent at the beak, appressed but erecto-patent in fruit. Outer most involucral bracts 2 x 0.75 mm, oblong, obtuse, hairy on the base, margins ciliate, apex thickish, brown lipped, with few sessile dark brown glands. Involucral bracts of 2nd. row 2.25 x 0.75 mm, narrowly ovate-oblong, acutish-obtuse, margins ciliate, base at the back bearded with long soft hairs, apex brown tipped, with few, sessile, brown glands. Involucral bracts of the 3rd. row 2.75 x 0.75 mm, similar to the bract of the preceding row. Involucral bracts of the 4th. row 3 x 1 mm, oblong, acute, margins ciliate, base at the back bearded, with long soft hairs, apex shortly brown lipped, with few scattered, sessile, brown glands. Involueral bracts of 5th. row 4.5 x 1 mm, linear-oblong, acute, margins ciliate. base bearded at the back, tip shortly brown lipped. Corolla 6 mm (include. lobes). 5 lobed; lobes 0.5-0.75 mm, narrowly ovate, acutish-obtuse. Ovary 2-2.5 mm long, weakly compressed, oblong, with tapering base, hairy and glandular; glands stalked, glistening; pappus 2 rowed; outer row of c. 0.5 mm long connate scales; inner row of c. 40 setae; setae very shortly connate at the base, scabrid, equaling or slightly exceeding the corolla length.
