General Appearance

Centaurea ammocyanus Boiss., it is an annual, arachnoid tomentose, sub-viscid, greyish-green with main stem frequently reduced to a sessile head. Branched from the base, branches prostrate, 15-30 cm long. Basal leaves petiolate, obovate, up to 35 mm long, entire, distantly toothed or pinnate-lyrate. Cauline leaves linear, pinnatilobed; lobes 2-6, toothed; upper most cauline leaves entire. Capitula solitary the one on the main axis sub sessile, others sessile. Involucral bracts glabrous, greenish, without distinct nerves; apical appendages shortly decurrent, ± covering the bodies of the subsequent involueral bracts, with margins white, fimbriate, center dark coloured, apices spinesccnt; spines as long as or slightly longer than the lateral teeth. dark coloured, erect. Florets pink; outer neuter, radiant. Cypsela greenish, glabrous, pappose; outer pappus setae blackish, as long as the cypsela; inner setae ± 3 times smaller than the outer ones.
