General Appearance
Catananche lutea L., it is an annual herb, appressed hairy. Stem somewhat thickened and fibrous at the base, giving rise to monocephalic fertile branches of up to 25 cm height. Leaves mostly crowded at the base of the stem forming a rosette, (50-) 70-120 x 6-9 mm. narrowly oblanceolate, attenuate into a short, dilated petiole; margins entire or weakly and sparsely toothed; leaves in the upper part of stem few or absent, linear, sessile. Capitula solitary, terminal. pedunculate and as well as sessile in the axils of the leaves of the rosette; peduncles 5-15 (-20) cm long, thickly villous hairy, with 2-3 small, extra involucral bracts below the involucre. Involucre 15-22 (-25) mm long. Involucral bracts (4-) 5-7 rowed, scarious with a brownish midrib. Outermost involucraI bracts 4.5 x 3-4 mm, broadly ovate, acute. Involucral bracts of 2nd row up to 6,5 x 4,5 mm. broadly ovate, acuto-aeuminate. Involucral bracts of the 3rd row up to 9 x 4.5 mm. ovate, acute. Involucral bracts of 4th row up to 13.5 x 4.5 mm, linear-ovate, acute. Inner most involucral bracts up 10 22 x 4 mm, linear-lanceolate or lanceolate, attenuate-acute. Ligules yellow, hairy on under surfaces. Cypsela up to5 mm long, 5-angled, stiff hairy; pappus dimorphic; pappus of the peripheral cypselas non-aristate, those of the central cypsela aristate.
