General Appearance

Catananche caerulea L., it is a perennial, with a perennating stem giving rise to several annual aerial shoots. Aerial shoots up to (20-) 30-60 (-100) cm, branched, hairy; hairs mostly appressed. Leaves linear or linear-lanceolate, entire or with few, linear, usually forwardly directed teeth, villous to pubescent. Basal leaves (20-) 8-150 (-200) x 2-7 mm, attenuate into a long petiole. Cauline leaves 10-15 mm long, ± sessile, remote; uppermost cauline leaves much reduced, ± like the involucral bracts. Capitula pedunculate, solitary terminal on branch ends; peduncles up to 30 cm. Involucre 13-25 x 10-20 mm. All involucral bracts ovate, scarious, loosely imbricate, apex abruptly and acutely cuspidate, silver-white except the brown median nerve. Ligules blue to white, rarely yellow, Cypsela obconical, 5-ribbed, densely villous; pappus homomorphic, of 5 scales; scales lanceolate, aristate.
