General Appearance
Carlina sicula Ten. //Infraspecifics: Carlina sicula ssp. mareotica (Asch. & Schweinf.) Greuter it is a sub glabrous perennial, up to (5-) 10·30 (-70) cm. simple or with few short branches arising from an underground rhizome. Lower part of the aerial stem usually covered with the bases of dry leaves. Lower leaves 40 x 70 x 20 mm (incl. spines), oblong, pinnatisect; lobes spiny toothed. Mid-cauline leaves 60-80 x 25-35 mm (incl. spines), oblong-lanceolate, pinnatifid to pinnatisect with lobes and margins spiny-toothed. Capitula 2-4, in a crowded terminal cluster, or 1-2, sub sessile in leaf axils lower-down,15-40 mm in diam. (exclude, the outermost involueral bracts). Outer involucral bracts 25-35 (-80-100) mm long, erecto-patent, coriaceous and somewhat clavateat the bases and rest similar to the upper cauline-leaves. Middle involucral bracts 8-10 (-12) x 2.5 mm, oblong, herbaceous with narrow scarious margins, finely apiculate, arachnoid tomentose on the back in the distal halves. Innermost involucral bracts 18-22 x 2-2.25 mm, oblong, exceeding the florets, parts projecting above the florets silver white above, white or purplish beneath, apiculate, margins finely ciliate. Florets yellow. Cypsela 3 mm; pappus c, 9 mm.
