General Appearance

Bellevalia sessiliflora (Viv.) Kunth ,  it is a bulbous geophyte, green herb with sub globular solitary tunicate bulb, 1.5,3 cm diam., tunics membranous, grey to light brownish. Leaves 2-3 per plant, basal, green, the underground portion usually violaceous, linear to lanceolate, surface smooth with many nerves, acuminate tip usually recurving; 10-30 x 1-2 cm, basal half usually canaliculate, margin denticulate; the papillae unequal in length and with unarranged pattern of distribution. Scape 1-4 per plant at different stages of maturity, erect at flowering and bending at fruiting, cylindrical, glabrous, basal portion again becoming, violaceous 10-20 cm long. Inflorescence racemose with 15-40 sessile bracteates flowers. Perianth tubular-campanulate, white to white-pinkish, becoming brownish after fertilization. Tepals 6, ovate, c. 0.3 x 0.25 cm, dorsal side of the outer three slightly protruded. Stamens 6 adnate to the rim or perianth tube, filaments white, ± triangular. Anthers medifixed, c. 0.1 cm long, dark-violet in colour. Ovary ovoid with three distinct locules. with two ovoils each. Style shorter than stamens with capitate stigma. Capsule ovoid to sub globular, -triquetrae. Seeds black.
