Bellevalia mauritanica Pomel

General Appearance

Bellevalia mauritanica Pomel ,  it is a bulbous geophyte, bulb ± ovoid, c. 4 cm in diameter, covered with dark-brown, membranous tunics. Leaves 3-4 per plant, as long as the scape, c. 40 x 3 cm, linear, canaliculate. with attenuating tips and papillose margins. Scape one, robust, c. 40 cm long, basal portion usually covered with leaf sheaths. Many-flowered, pedicls bracteates, c. 1 cm long violaceous; bracts ovate-obtuse, membranous, whitish violaceous. Perianth campanulate, c. 1 cm long, whitish-violaceous; tepals 6, oblong, obtuse, with papilla on the outer side, 1/3-1/2 of their length, connate to form a tube. Stamens 6, included, filaments whitish ± deltate at base, Anthers medifixed, dark-violaceous. Ovary blue with whitish Style and capitate stigma. Capsule ± obovoid with three distinct lobes. Seeds 2 in each locule, sub globose, blackish in colour.
