General Appearance

Atractylis cancellata L., it is a slender annual. Stems up to 3-30 cm, white-lanate or appressed cobwebby, sometimes purplish-glabrescent in the young parts, simple or branched from the base. Leaves greenish, arachnoid-pubescent. Basal leaves up to 50 x8 mm, oblanceolate, oblong obovate or spathulate, dentate, shortly spiny. Cauline leaves up to 30 x 6 mm. linear-lanceolate or narrowly oblanceolate, coriaceous, dentate, spiny. Capitula solitary, ovate or sub-globose, discoid, (5-) 15-20 mm long and (5-) 15-20 mm in dim, (excl. suppl. involucral bracts). Supplementary involueral bracts 1 (-2)-rowed, erect, (7-) 15-24 mm long, pectinato-pinnatipartite with lobes pinnatifid- spinescent, and with apicular-subulate, excurrent rachis; spines whitish or yellowish brown when young often turning deep violaceous after anthaesis. Outermost involucral bracts 4 x 2 mm, ovate, lanate at the back, broad, scarious hyaline margined and apex obtuse apiculate; apiculum up to 1 mm long. Involucral bract of the 2nd row 5.5 x 2 mm, ovate-oblong, lanate at the back, broadly scarious hyaline margined, obtuse and abruptly apiculate; apiculum up to 1 mm. Involucral bract of the 3rd row 6-6.5 mm, broadly lanceolate, lanate at the back below the apex, broadly scarious hyaline margined; occasionally margined somewhat purplish-below the apex; apex obtuse and abruptly apiculate. Involucral bract of the 4th row 9-9.5 x 2.5 mm, lanceolate, lanate below the apex, broadly scarious hyaline margined, (except near the apex purplish); apex obtuse, abruptly apiculate; apiculum c. 1-1.25 mm. Involucral bract of the 5th row 10 x 2 mm, lanceolate, lanate in the upper half at the midrib, broadly scarious, hyaline margined, acute, gradually tapered above into a soft, c. 1 mm long apiculum. Innermost involucral bracts 10-11 x 0.75-1 mm, linear, ovate, scarious, glabrous, sharply acuto-acuminatc; margin distantly cmolate. Floret purple. Cypsela 3-4 x 1.5-2 mm; pappus 8-10 mm, white, slightly exserted from the involucre when ripe.
