General Appearance

Allium ampeloprasum L. / Synonyms: Allium leucanthum K.Koch, Allium porrum L., it is a bulbous geophyte, bulbs ovate, usually with many small dark yellow bullbats; tunics, white, membranous. Leaves 4-8, linear. flat, canaliculate, up to 50 cm long, forming sheaths half as high as the scape; scape tall up to 100 cm; spathe 1-valved, with beak up to 8 cm, deciduous. Umbel spherical with many flowers; pedicels unequal, many times as long as the campanulate flowers; tepals pink to purple, inner slightly shorter than the outer; filaments exerted, the inner tricuspidate, the 2 lateral sterile filaments longer than the fertile central one. the outer 3 filaments simple; anthers yellow-reddish.
