Birds in Libya

These are vertebrate animals belonging to the cold-blooded category, characterized by their agile bipedal movement, colorful wings and feathers, beak without teeth, high metabolic rate, four-chambered heart, and a lightweight yet strong skeletal structure. Many of them migrate annually, and Libya is home to several major migration routes. Birds represent living elements that complement the beauty of the natural environment, and their presence and sounds provide psychological comfort and enjoyment. In addition to their numerous environmental benefits, such as controlling insects and small worms that harm crops, pollinating plants, and spreading seeds through their legs, birds also hold cultural and literary value, being evident in Libyan poetry and proverbs.

In Libya, 356 bird species have been recorded, belonging to 61 families and 18 orders. Among these species, 41 are threatened with extinction, both locally and globally. National environmental organizations are working to raise awareness about the importance of birds and strive to protect their habitats to reduce the risk of extinction that many local, migratory, and other wildlife species face.
