General Appearance

 Phonus lanatus (L.) Hill ̸ Homotypic Synonyms: Carthamus lanatus L., it is an annual or biennial, up to (10-) 50-60 (-100) cm. Stems erect, brownish to straw, coloured, sparsely to densely lanate- villous and glandular hairy, branched above; branches somewhat spreading. Basal and lower cauline leaves nearly pinnatifid, 30-60 x 20-30 mm, oblong in outline, tapered below into a short wide petiole; lobes toothed spinulose; rest of the leaves stiff-coriaceous, glandular, villous, pinnatifid to pinnatsect, subulate spiny at the apices; lobes toothed spiny with apices somewhat subulate spiny. Capitula solitary, terminal, ovoid, 15-20 mm in diam. and 25-35 mm long (exuded. supplementary involucral bracts), yellow, pale-yellow or whitish, Supplementary involucral bracts similar to the upper-cauline-leaves, 2 (-3)-rowed, erecto patent or somewhat recurved to nearly deflexed, 25-45 mm long, appearing to be1̸2-2 times as long as the involucre. Outer and middle involucral bracts 18-22 x 5-7 mm (include. apical spines & appendages), oblong to oblong-lanceolate, coriaceous glossy in the lower paris, dull-brown, hairy in the upper parts, thinly scarious margined; apical appendages deltoid-ovate to nearly circular, flat, scarious, shortly ciliate setose margined, somewhat keeled at the back; keel prolonged into 1.5-4 mm long, brownish spinule. Inner involucral bracts 15-20 x 1.5-2.5 mm, linear-lanceolate to linear, long-acuminate; acumine occasionally dark tipped. Corolla 22-25 mm long; filaments bearded below the anther bases. Cypsela 4 x 2 mm, oblong, 4-angled, rugose, dark-coloured; outer cypsela epappose; inner pappose; pappus 4-6 mm long, persistent, of few rows of unequal scales.
