General Appearance
Volutaria muricata (L.) Maire / Homotypic Synonyms: Cyanopsis muricata (L.) Dostál, it is an annuals herb, up to (10-) 15-60 cm, erect, arachnoid-hairy. Stems simple or branched, mono cephalic, sulcate, upper part of stem or upper branches leafless. Leaves oblong, oblong-lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, arachnoid-hairy. Basal leaves and lower cauline leaves 40-80 x 5-20 mm, entire to pinnatipartite with segments entire to remotely dentate, obtuse, mucronate, petiolate. Mid-cauline leaves sessile, entire or pinnatipartite, somewhat auriculate at the base. Upper most cauline leaves, sessile, reduced. up to 20 mm long, entire, mucronate. Capitula on long, aphyllous peduncles, c. 2.5-4 (-5) cm in diam. Involucre 10-15 mm in diam., 10-15 mm long. Involucral bract appressed, densely villous, ovate-lanceolate, with narrow black-scarious, margins and tapered above into long (up to 5 mm), soft, straw-colored, erect or deflexed spinescent mucro. Florets purplish-pink or purple, sometimes the peripheral florets bluish or whitish. Cypsela c. 4 mm long, sparsely hairy, with hairs in the pits between the ribs: pappus ivory-white, 2̸3 as long as the cypsela, or nearly equalling the length of the cypsela; scales of the pappus oblong-lanceolate with serrulate margins and apices.
