General Appearance

Volutaria crupinoides (Desf.) Cass. ex Maire / Homotypic Synonyms:  Amberboa crupinoides (Desf.) DC. // Heterotypic Synonyms: Amberboa libyca (Viv.) Alavi, it is an annual herb, up to 90 cm tall. Stems leafy throughout, villous, branched. Basal leaves pinnatifid with lobes denticulate, broadly obtuse. Mid-cauline leaves multifid, with oblong or linear-oblong, acute, denticulate lobes, sessile with base decurrent for a short distance on the stem. Upper cauline leaves entire to pinnatifid, linear in outline, sessile, basal lobes either decurrent for a very short distance on the stem or subauriculate. Capitula (1-) 24 in a loose corymb at the ends of branches, with marginal florets bright blue and disc florets yellow. Outer and middle involucral bracts linear lanceolate, villous at the back, greenish, 3-5 nerved, with ± hyaline scarious margins and dark coloured near the apices below the appendages; appendages scarious, brownish, narrow and acute, gradually and insensibly decurrent on the margins of the involucral bract. Corolla tube of the disc florets densely hairy with long, silky hairs. Cypsela 2.5-3 x 1.5 mm (exclude. pappus), hairy and pilled between the ribs; umbo 0.5-1 mm, with 5 ridges; pappus cream coloured or whitish, sub-3-rowed, as long as the cypsela; outermost setae shortest, filiform; inner setae flattened, scale-like. with minutely serrate margins.
