Reichardia tingitana (L.) Roth

General Appearance

Reichardia tingitana (L.) Roth, it is a  predominantly annual species, nearly stemless or with well-developed stems up to 30 cm tall. Leaves with white papillae on the blade, with an erose, incised, sinuate, or nearly entire margin, always spinulose. Peduncles strongly enlarged at the top with bracts having scarious margins. Involucral bracts ending in a very prominent, almost black mucro. Flowers arranged in heads, with the base of the ligule limb strongly tinged with purple. ligules yellow. purplish at bases. the outer with a red stripe on outer face (in Libyan material sometime capitula yellow and concolorous), c. twice as long as the involucre. Anthers purple. Achenes of two types: the inner ones straight or slightly curved, up to c. 2.1 x 0.7 mm, matte, glabrous, white or pale cream, tetragonal prism-shaped, with 4 transversely grooved ribs; the outer ones more or less curved, shorter, up to c. 1.55 x 0.8 mm, matte, glabrous, cinnamon-colored, obconical, with 4-5 ribs grooved transversely more deeply than in the inner achenes.
