General Appearance

Picris hispanica (Willd.) P.D.Sell, it is a small perennial, up to 4-20 cm tall, hisrsute-hairy. Stems branched from the base; indumentum of mixed hairs; some anchor-hooked, some unhooked bifurcate, some simple, broad based gloehid hairs. others soft hairs. Basal leaves oblanceolate, 25-80 x 10-25 mm, pinnatisect, attenuate into a petiole; lobes linear to narrowly triangular. Cauline leaves similar but smaller than the basal leaves. Capitula 1 (-2). Peduncles stout, thickened in fruit, not constricted below the capitulum; bracts on peduncles few, aciculiform, not merging with the involucral bracts. Involucre 13-20 x 10-15 mm. Involucral bracts lanceolate, obtuse-acute, lanate hairy as well as glochid hairy mainly on the median line. Outer involucral bracts up to 1̸2 as long as the innerones. Ligules yellow, up to 16 mm (include, basal tube of 6 mm), limb 2.5 mm wide, 5 lobed; lobes 0.5-0.75 mm; fundus and upper part of the tube silky hairy. Cypselas dimorphic; peripheral cypselas slender, up to 7 mm. incurved, fusiform, gradually tapered above into a stout beak, pubescent; pappus cupuliform, up to 1.5 mm. scabrid; inner cypselas up to 8 mm long, incurved, fusiform, tapered above into a slender beak. weakly muricate; pappus up to 10 mm. of numerous, plumose, dirty white setae.
